Describing
a person

A friend, a colleague, someone waiting at the airport, the main character of a film. In French every description runs on four verbs and one list of adjectives, and both are short enough to learn this week. Everything on this page is A1 or A2.

4 verbs 120 useful words 3 model portraits 10 chapters

Anatomy of a description

elle a les cheveux·bruns

The verb decides everything

French does not say she has brown hair the way English does. It says elle a les cheveux, with les, never a possessive. Choose the right verb (être, avoir, porter, faire) and the sentence almost writes itself.

The adjective follows and agrees

The describing word comes after the noun and changes to match it: brunbruns for les cheveux, brune for une femme. Two rules, one page.

The four verbs

A1

Almost every sentence you will ever write about a person uses one of four verbs. Choose the right one and the rest of the sentence is just vocabulary.

Everything on this page is A1 or A2

No new tense, no new mood. You need the present of four verbs and the rule for making an adjective agree. If you have read chapter 02 of the conjugation guide, you already have the verbs.

The four verbs that carry a description être, avoir, porter, faire

VerbWhat it describesExample
être + adjectivewhat somebody isIl est grand. · Elle est très gentille.
avoir les + body part + adjectivehair, eyes, and parts of the bodyIl a les cheveux courts. · Elle a les yeux verts.
porter + article + nounclothes, glasses, a bag, a beardElle porte une robe rouge. · Il porte des lunettes.
avoir + number + ansageIl a vingt-huit ans.
The mistake every English speaker makes

English says he has brown hair and his hair is brown. French says il a les cheveux bruns, with the article les, not a possessive. il a ses cheveux bruns is wrong, and so is il est cheveux bruns.

Same for eyes: elle a les yeux bleus. Learn the two openings as fixed blocks: il a les cheveux… and il a les yeux…, and you will never build the sentence wrong.

One more useful phrase

avoir l’air + adjective means to look / to seem: il a l’air fatigué, elle a l’air gentille. Use it when you are describing an impression rather than a fact.

Il ___ les cheveux bruns.

a. Hair takes avoir: il a les cheveux.

Elle ___ très gentille.

est. An adjective about the person takes être.

Il ___ des lunettes.

porte. Glasses and clothes take porter.

Elle a ___ yeux verts.

les. Always the article les, never ses.

Il a vingt-huit ___.

ans. Age is avoir + number + ans.

02

Le physique

A1

Height, build, age and the general impression. Four short lists, and every one of these words works with être.

1 · La taille how tall

French (m / f)EnglishExample
grand / grandetallIl est grand. · Elle est grande.
petit / petiteshortElle est petite.
de taille moyenneof average heightNever changes. Il est de taille moyenne.
Il fait 1 m 80.He is 1m80Say it un mètre quatre-vingts.

2 · La corpulence build

French (m / f)EnglishCareful
minceslimSame for both. Always polite.
fort / fortewell built, heavy-setThe polite word. Use this one.
rond / rondea bit roundGentle and common.
gros / grossefatRude about a person. Avoid it in an exam.
musclé / muscléemuscular
sportif / sportiveathleticAlso describes the character.

3 · L’âge how old

FrenchEnglishNote
Il a 30 ans.He is 30.avoir, not être. Never leave out ans.
jeuneyoungSame for both genders.
âgé / âgéeelderlyPolite. vieux / vieille is blunter.
Il a la trentaine. He is in his thirties.A2. Also la vingtaine, la quarantaine.

4 · L’impression générale beau, joli, élégant

French (m / f)English
beau / bellegood-looking
joli / joliepretty (usually about a woman or a thing)
mignon / mignonnecute
élégant / éléganteelegant, smart
souriant / souriantesmiling
Être or avoir ?

Height, build, age-adjectives and looks all take être: il est grand, elle est mince, il est jeune. The one exception is the number: il a 30 ans, because French counts years as something you have, not something you are.

Elle est ___. (tall)

grande. Feminine adds -e: grande.

Il ___ vingt-cinq ans.

a. Age uses avoir.

Elle est ___. (slim)

mince. Mince already ends in -e, so it does not change.

Il est ___. (average height)

de taille moyenne. A fixed phrase that never changes.

03

Cheveux et yeux

A1

The most formulaic part of the whole page, and the part an examiner or a stranger at the airport actually needs. One sentence pattern covers it.

One sentence pattern, filled three ways

Hair takes three describing words at most, and always in this order: length, then shape, then colour. In practice two is plenty.

il / elle a les cheveux+length+shape+colour

1 · Les cheveux always plural

LengthShapeColour
longs longraides straightbruns brown
courts shortondulés wavychâtains light brown
mi-longs shoulder-lengthbouclés curlyblonds blond
frisés tightly curlednoirs black
roux red / ginger
gris grey · blancs white
Cheveux is always plural

There is no singular. So every adjective after it takes -s: les cheveux courts et bruns, les cheveux longs et bouclés. This is true even when the person is a woman: the adjective agrees with cheveux (masculine plural), not with her.

Two more: il est chauve (he is bald), and il a une barbe / une moustache: these use avoir une, not les.

2 · Les yeux the short list

FrenchEnglishAgreement
les yeux bleusblue eyesregular
les yeux vertsgreen eyesregular
les yeux grisgrey eyesalready ends in -s
les yeux noirsblack eyesregular
les yeux marronbrown eyesnever changes
les yeux noisettehazel eyesnever changes
Why marron never changes

Marron and noisette are the names of a chestnut and a hazelnut. They are nouns being used as colours, so they stay exactly as they are: les yeux marron, une robe marron, des chaussures marron. Never marrons for a colour.

The same happens with orange: des chaussures orange.

Quick test · build the sentencetap a card to flip

Elle a les cheveux ___. (brown)

bruns. Cheveux is plural, so the adjective takes -s.

Il a les yeux ___. (brown)

marron. Marron never changes.

Elle a ___ cheveux longs.

les. Always the article les.

Il a les cheveux ___. (short and curly)

courts et bouclés. Length first, then shape, both with -s.

04

Les vêtements

A1

What somebody is wearing is the fastest way to make them recognisable, and it is one verb plus one agreement rule.

1 · Les vêtements porter + un / une / des

MasculineFemininePlural
un pantalon trousersune robe dressdes chaussures shoes
un jean jeansune jupe skirtdes baskets trainers
un pull jumperune chemise shirtdes bottes boots
un manteau coatune veste jacketdes lunettes glasses
un chapeau hatune écharpe scarfdes gants gloves
un sac à dos backpackune casquette cap

2 · The colour agrees with the clothes pas avec la personne

You writeWhy
un pull bleupull is masculine singular
une robe bleuerobe is feminine, so add -e
des chaussures noiresfeminine plural: -e and -s
des gants noirsmasculine plural: -s
une veste marronmarron never changes
The colour looks at the garment, not at the person

A man can wear une veste verte, with an -e, because veste is feminine. A woman can wear un pull vert, with no -e. The person’s gender is irrelevant here. This one sentence saves more marks than any other on the page.

3 · Two ready-made openings être en, avoir

FrenchEnglishWhen
Il porte un jean et un pull gris.He is wearing jeans and a grey jumper. The normal one.
Il est en jean.He is in jeans.Short and spoken. être en + garment, no article.
Elle est en noir. She is in black.être en + a colour.
Il a un sac à dos noir.He has a black backpack. For things carried rather than worn.
The airport sentence

If somebody has to recognise a person, three details are enough, and this is the order that works : height + hair + one piece of clothing.

Elle est petite, elle a les cheveux longs et bouclés, et elle porte un manteau rouge.

Elle porte une robe ___. (blue)

bleue. Robe is feminine, so the colour adds -e.

Elle porte un pull ___. (green)

vert. Pull is masculine: the person’s gender changes nothing.

Il porte des chaussures ___. (black)

noires. Chaussures is feminine plural: -e then -s.

Il ___ des lunettes.

porte. Glasses take porter.

quelqu’un de is always masculine

A very common way to describe character is C’est quelqu’un de + adjective. After quelqu’un de the adjective stays masculine, even about a woman :

Ma sœur est gentille. but Ma sœur, c’est quelqu’un de gentil.

3 · Three fixed phrases à réutiliser

FrenchEnglish
Il a beaucoup d’humour. He has a great sense of humour.
Elle a bon caractère.She is easy-going.
Il est toujours de bonne humeur. He is always in a good mood.
Quick test · caractèretap a card to flip

Ma sœur est ___. (kind)

gentille. gentil doubles the l and adds -e.

Elle est très ___. (generous)

généreuse. -eux becomes -euse in the feminine.

C’est quelqu’un de ___. (kind, about a woman)

gentil. After quelqu’un de the adjective stays masculine.

Mon frère est ___. (funny)

drôle. Already ends in -e, so nothing changes.

Adjective agreement

A1

One regular pattern, seven small families and six irregulars. Learn this chapter and every list on this page becomes usable.

The adjective copies the noun it describes. Add -e for feminine, add -s for plural, add both for feminine plural. Ninety per cent of adjectives do exactly that.

Agree with the noun, not with the person

This catches everybody. Les cheveux is masculine plural, so a woman has les cheveux longs, never les cheveux longues. A man wears une chemise blanche, never un chemise blanc. Find the noun first, then agree.

Elle est ___. (athletic)

sportive. -if becomes -ive.

C’est une ___ femme.

belle. beau becomes belle.

Elle a les cheveux ___.

longs. Agrees with cheveux, masculine plural.

Elle est ___. (happy)

heureuse. -eux becomes -euse.

Il porte une chemise ___. (white)

blanche. chemise is feminine: blanc becomes blanche.

07

Where the adjective goes

A2

French describes after the noun, English before it. Get this the right way round and your sentences immediately stop sounding translated.

French puts the adjective after the noun. That is the default, and it is the opposite of English. A short list of very common adjectives goes in front instead.

RuleExamples
After the noun, almost alwaysune femme sympathique · un homme sérieux · des cheveux bruns · une robe rouge
Before the noun, a short fixed listbeau, joli, jeune, vieux, grand, petit, gros, bon, mauvais, nouveau
✦ Memory hook

The ten that go in front are all short and all about size, age, beauty or quality. Everything longer (and every colour, every nationality, every character word) goes behind. une jolie fille but une fille intelligente.

You writeEnglish
une jolie robea pretty dress
un jeune hommea young man
une vieille damean old lady
une robe rougea red dress
un homme gentila kind man
une jolie robe bleuea pretty blue dress: one in front, one behind
One pair worth knowing

A couple of adjectives change meaning with position. The famous one : un grand homme is a great man, while un homme grand is a tall man. For a physical description, put grand after the noun, or simply say il est grand and avoid the question entirely.

a pretty dress = ___

une jolie robe. joli is one of the ten that go in front.

a red dress = ___

une robe rouge. Colours always go after the noun.

a kind man = ___

un homme gentil. Character adjectives go after the noun.

a young man = ___

un jeune homme. jeune is on the short list, so it goes in front.

08

Nuance and comparison

A2

Six little words that turn a flat list of adjectives into a real description, plus the one pattern for putting two people side by side.

1 · Turn the volume up or down les adverbes

FrenchStrengthExample
trèsveryIl est très gentil.
vraimentreallyElle est vraiment drôle.
assezquiteIl est assez grand.
plutôtratherElle est plutôt calme.
un peua littleIl est un peu timide.
pas trèsnot veryIl n’est pas très bavard.
troptooElle est trop sérieuse. A criticism
un peu only goes with faults

Un peu means a little too much of something, so French uses it with the negative side : un peu timide, un peu bavard, un peu têtu. Saying il est un peu gentil sounds like faint praise, almost an insult. For qualities use assez or très.

2 · Comparing two people plus, moins, aussi

plus/moins/aussi+adjective+que
FrenchEnglish
Il est plus grand que moi.He is taller than me.
Elle est moins timide que sa sœur.She is less shy than her sister.
Il est aussi gentil que son frère.He is as kind as his brother.
C’est le plus jeune de la famille. He is the youngest in the family.
The one irregular comparison

bon does not take plus. It becomes meilleur : Elle est meilleure que moi en français. Never plus bonne. Everything else on this page is regular.

Il est ___ gentil. (very)

très. très goes before the adjective.

Elle est ___ timide. (a little)

un peu. un peu goes with the negative side.

Il est plus grand ___ moi.

que. The comparison always closes with que.

Elle est ___ que moi en français.

meilleure. bon becomes meilleur, feminine meilleure.

09

Three model portraits

A2

A friend, a family member and a film character. Same six moves every time.

Three finished texts, from short to longer. Read each one, then cover it and rebuild it with your own person. The words in the stem colour are the four verbs; the words in the ending colour are the adjectives.

1 · Mon ami A1 · 55 mots

Mon ami s’appelle Karim. Il a vingt-huit ans. Il est grand et mince. Il a les cheveux courts et noirs, et les yeux marron. Il porte souvent un jean et des baskets blanches. Karim est très gentil et toujours souriant. Il est un peu timide, mais quand on le connaît, il est très drôle.

Age, then height and build, then hair and eyes, then clothes, then character. That order works for any person and you never have to think about it again.

2 · Ma sœur A2 · 75 mots

Ma sœur Leila a trente-deux ans. Elle est de taille moyenne et elle a les cheveux longs et bouclés. Ses cheveux sont châtains. Elle a les yeux verts et un très joli sourire. Aujourd’hui, elle porte une robe bleue et un manteau noir. Leila, c’est quelqu’un de généreux et de patient. Elle est aussi très travailleuse : elle est infirmière. Elle est plus calme que moi.

Notice three things: quelqu’un de généreux stays masculine although Leila is a woman, travailleuse takes the -euse feminine, and the last sentence compares her with somebody, an easy way to add a line.

3 · Un personnage de film A2 · 80 mots

Le personnage principal du film s’appelle Amélie. C’est une jeune femme brune, petite et mince. Elle a les cheveux courts et les yeux noirs. Elle porte souvent une robe rouge. Amélie est timide et elle parle peu, mais elle est très curieuse et très imaginative. Elle aime aider les autres. C’est un personnage doux et un peu triste.

For a film or a book character, open with le personnage principal s’appelle… and close with c’est un personnage…. The middle is exactly the same machinery as the other two portraits.

The order that always works

1. name and age  2. height and build  3. hair and eyes  4. clothes  5. two character words  6. one sentence that compares or concludes. Six moves, about 70 words, and it fits any person you will ever be asked to describe.

Where to go next

To build the sentences, the present of être, avoir and porter is in chapter 02 of the conjugation guide. For the articles in front of the clothes (un, une, des) and more on adjectives, see the grammar page. And to describe somebody in a real exam message, the Tâche 1 models show where a description fits inside a full text.
